The 1XI delivered a good performance on Saturday with some notable contributions across the board. Although they weren't able to prevent Oxton from reaching their target, it was a strong outing against a well balanced Oxton side.
Batting first in hot conditions, Bowdon saw off the new ball well and played themselves into the contest. A classy 50 from Ross Zelem was well supported by knocks of 28 from Jack Tipton and 17 off 40 from James Teasdale. Bowdon built a solid platform with wickets in hand to approach the final 15 overs. An excellent partnership from skipper Matthew Tully and Alex Makin, saw the score rise to 178-6 off the 55 overs.
A strong start was needed with the ball and the signs were good when an excellent run out from James Bottomley removed opener Luke Filer. Openers Rob Lord and Matthew Tully bowled with intent and early wickets soon began to fall. Oxton were reduced to 15-4 after Matthew created real problems with the new ball (3-40 off 12.5). Oxton managed to steady the ship expertly, but were never able to get away. Tight middle overs bowling from Isaac Brooks (2-41 off 14) ensured the game would go to the death. Rob took two wickets to leave Oxton in nervous territory 8 wickets down. They were able to reach the target with 7 balls left and hit the summit of the premier league.
For Bowdon, it represents a good performance and more points on the board in a season that has started in a very positive manner. Next week sees our 1XI travel to Neston before an exciting local derby in the cup against Sale.
